Calling all strong girls! Who wants to learn from our example?

Role models: an exhibition at the Volkshochschule (VHS) Aachen showcases women of mathematics.

Yes, OK, Pippi Longstocking may well have had her own unique rules of mathematics – with which she would have had a pretty tough time surviving in the “Ivory Tower”. Nevertheless, she represents a role model for all women who do have an excellent command of maths, but who also have to muster plenty of self-confidence and perseverance if they want to hold their own in the academic world. Maths is still very much a man’s world.

An exhibition which was launched in 2016 in Berlin and has been touring the whole world ever since portrays women who have managed to make a successful career for themselves in this classic male preserve. The show is currently making a stop here in Aachen at the Volkshochschule, where three female RWTH professors will also be featured: the mathematicians Gabriele Nebe, Alice Niemeyer and Eva Zerz. So saddle up, girls, and head for the VHS!
